Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

There are four main types of NSCLC:

  • Adenocarcinoma: This is the most common type of lung cancer in both men and women and is typically found in the mucous-making glands that line the airways. It tends to grow more slowly and is often diagnosed earlier than other types of lung cancer.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: This type of lung cancer originates in the squamous cells, flat cells in the mucous membranes that line the inside of the airways.
  • Large cell carcinoma: This cancer can be found in any area of the lung. When viewed under the microscope, the cells are visibly large and round.
  • Not otherwise specified (NOS): In a small number of cases, the doctors will not be able to classify the exact type of NSCLC.
